Humans have a funny yet creative way to earn a living especially during these trying times. Many have become resourceful and inventive in order to earn a little extra from usual, and to be honest, most of their inventions and innovations had a way of helping the community improve their lifestyle. It is within the human nature that we become adaptive in our environment and resourceful in order to survive.
Just like this man in our feature story. He came up with a brilliant idea with winter melons but many in his community thought that his idea was somewhat ridiculous. Little did they know that through his invention, he came earning a lot more than usual from what he gets from it.
Winter melons are very common in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries, and it is not very hard to grow especially in dry and humid places. There are a lot of health and wellness benefits that can be derived from winter melon that is why a lot of people are either consuming it through drinking its juices or eating its fruit.
But the man came up with a very bright idea to use the winter melon as a trap for crayfishes, crabs, and even lobsters! Many have thought that his idea is just a product of playful imagination of children, but he proved himself to his community that his idea is not stupid at all.
He demonstrated how he catches lobsters through his winter melon trap. First, he crafted a net out of the fruit, and then he cut off both ends.
Next, he drilled three holes on the body of the fruit and placed three cylinder-shaped plastic nets on the holes that he carved. He secured it with wires attached on the fruit so that it won’t fall into the water.
After that, he stuck two bamboo sticks on both ends of the winter melon so that the lobsters or crayfishes he would catch from his trap won’t be able to escape.
Few minutes after he left his invention floating on the water, he came back to it and he noticed he had lured more lobsters inside his make-shift trap.
Because of this, this man had decided to make it his stable livelihood and earn a living for his wondrous invention. Even though people in his community used to laugh at his invention, he still shared his idea to them so that he can help his people earn a living through this method.
